About this pilgrimage

From the Phanar to the rock-hewn churches

The longer Turkey pilgrimage adds Cappadocia to the Seven Churches. The ascetic caves of the Cappadocian Fathers, the underground cities of the early Christians, and the monasteries hewn into the rock at Goreme, with the full route of the Seven Churches across the western coast of Asia Minor.

You will pray at the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the Phanar, venerate the Byzantine mosaics at Chora and Hagia Sophia. Then the road descends into the lunar landscape of Cappadocia, to the Goreme Open Air Museum and the underground cities where the early Christians sheltered from persecution. From Konya, the ancient Iconium of Saint Paul, the journey turns west across the south coast through Perge and Aspendos, to Hierapolis and Laodicea, and the full route of the Seven Churches.

Each open departure gathers Orthodox Christians from many parishes across the United States and Canada into one company of pilgrims.

Prices are per person in US dollars, for the land pilgrimage, sharing a twin or double room. The single supplement is quoted at booking, and we are glad to match willing pilgrims as roommates where we can. A deposit of $400 per person reserves your place. No payment is taken on the booking form.

The Cappadocian Fathers hollowed the rock for prayer. Their lamps have not gone out.
